Are you organic?
Yes and no. We are not Certified Organic because we can’t meet some requirements due to the physical limitations on the farm, this is unfortunately out of our control. That doesn’t mean we are throwing in the towel though. Check out the "About the Farm" page for more information.
We often use the phrase, “Organic, obviously.” A little cheeky, we know. But for us, being organic is obvious. We have trouble fathoming why anyone would want or need to use anything chemical based in relation to their food.
We believe being organic goes beyond the process of growing a plant. Organic to us means treating plants, animals, pollinators, the environment, fellow community members, yourself and everything in-between with respect, care, and kindness.
We are committed to trying our best to use only Certified Organic products. Sometimes, it’s not always possible or available. Here are some additional things we are committed to:
We only use non-GMO seeds
We grow with organic seeds as much as possible
We only use Certified Organic compost
We make our own organic seedling soil mix
We NEVER use any petroleum based / chemical fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides or any products of the sorts
We use a lot of human powered tools to cut down on the use of fossil fuels
We ride our bikes when possible
We source supplies from local businesses
Got some other ideas for how we can do better? Let us know!
You’re growing in Richmond, but you’re called Vancouver Farming Co. Wait - what - Huh?
Very good point. Originally we were planning on growing in Vancouver proper, but plans changed. Also, Vanfarmco sounds better than Richfarmco.
Where do you get your funding from?
Initial startup funding was provided by friends, family, and anonymous donors - all members of the Vancouver community, all wanting to support others from the same community. Future funding will be from grants, local business sponsors and other local organizations.
We again want to profusely thank our generous donors. Without your support, none of this would be possible.
Do you need experience to volunteer?
No. We just ask that you are eager to learn, a hard worker, not afraid to get dirty, are a nice person and have a good sense of humour (crucial).
I have some physical limitations, can I still get involved?
YES! There’s always a thousand and one different things to do. We encourage anyone and everyone to get involved. Almost every task has multiple ways to complete it. We don’t see them as limitations, we seem them as an opportunity to do something in a new way. Heck, that new way could be the new way for everyone!
Do you take interns or apprentices?
Yes? We don’t have an official internship/apprentice program yet. Though we are working very hard to create an epic one! That being said, shoot us an email as we are very open to having a chat about it. Who knows, YOU could be the first one.
Can I buy any of your food? Or is it all for donation?
Currently, we are not set up for individual sales. If you are interested in a bulk purchase, shoot us an email!
Do you ever hire paid staff?
Yes! But due to funding, positions are very limited. Still, email us if you’re interested. Any job postings will be posted on our website and social media. Keep an eye out!
